A mountain and a rock look the same size in a grid. Nature photos carry no scale cue of their own, and a collage removes the only one they had: the frame they were seen in.

Put six photos of people in a grid and every one is instantly readable, because a face is a known size. Put six landscapes in the same grid and the eye has nothing to measure against: a cliff and a kerb occupy the same cell and look equally large. That is the problem this page is about, along with a second one that only appears when landscapes sit side by side.

1. Putting the scale back

Three ways, in order of how well they work.

One photo with a person in it. A single figure on a path calibrates every other cell around it. It is the most effective thing on this page and it costs one photo.

Vary the cell sizes deliberately. A wide view in a large cell and a detail in a small one tells the eye which is which, where six equal cells insist they are the same.

Include one close detail. Bark, moss, water on stone. It cannot be mistaken for a distant view, so it anchors the rest by contrast.

A collage of six wide views with no figure and no detail is the default failure here, and it is why so many landscape collages read as wallpaper.

2. Horizons fight each other

This one is specific to landscapes and it is invisible until you look for it.

Every wide nature photo has a strong horizontal line across it. Put four in a grid and you have four horizons at four different heights, and the eye reads the mismatch as a mistake even though every photo is fine on its own.

Crop them to agree. Move the horizon to roughly the same height in each cell of a row. It is a small crop and the improvement is out of proportion to the effort.

Or break the row. A layout with cells at different heights has no rows to compare across, which is why angled and staggered arrangements suit landscapes better than tidy grids.

3. Green is harder than it looks

Nature photos are mostly green and blue, and both go muddy when crowded. Six green cells with thin gaps become one green rectangle.

Wider gaps than usual. The background separating the cells is doing real work here, more than in any other subject.

A pale neutral ground. Cream, bone or a light grey. A green background disappears into the photos and a warm one fights them, which is worth knowing before choosing a sunset gradient for a forest.

4. Make one

Pick a collage above and it opens ready. Look for one photo with a person or a path in it before anything else: without a scale cue, the arrangement is doing work the photos should be doing.

Print sizes if it is going on a wall, which suits this subject more than most.
